What to do when everything seems unfair?

I thought life would be fair if I gave the right attitude, time, and effort. But as I grew older, I realised that nothing is fair.

I guess, deep down, when we grow up, we all come to realise that life isn’t fair. However, I was sure that with consistency and hard work, that it would balance out, that I would get what I deserve and what I want. But it was slowly revealed to me that this was not the case. Hard work, consistency, and ambition did not yield all that many results. I could work hard and put in long hours, and sometimes just make enough to survive and pay bills. I could do everything right yet achieve so little, and sometimes I’d achieve no result at all. Yet I could see others do everything wrong and receive much more.

So, the thought of quitting or cheating crept into my mind. Like, screw it, why should I play an unfair game, or worse, a game that is potentially rigged from the start? Especially when it felt like ‘facing a fate that cannot be changed.’ – (Frankl)

But then I was hit with a strange insight and realisation:

Firstly, is that quitting can only lead to one result, and that is nothing. Any result that you do actually get would be from dumb luck. Also, no one ever respected anyone who got knocked down and chose to stay down.

Secondly, you could win by cheating. However, cheating means that you can never truly win, even if you do come first. For example, look at the cyclist Lance Armstrong, a man who ‘won’ by being a drug cheat, but now is forever disgraced, and technically never won anything. In the end, it doesn’t matter if he claims that ‘everyone was doing it.’ Ultimately, all his efforts led him to being a disgraced fraud, a joke, and now no one will look up to him ever again.

Thirdly, is that you could half-arse it and give a smaller percent of your effort, but that can only lead to regret. Because you’ll never know your potential. You’ll never know how good you could have been if you had actually given it real effort and time. Which means you’ll always be haunted by the words ‘what if.’ Believe me, too many people live out their lives like this.

Lastly, and the only real option, is that you can work hard, consistently, and put in the time. And win or lose, you’ll never regret your effort. Because no one ever won or reached their potential by putting in a half measure, by shrinking, or holding back. The right result only comes from the right action. Because reaching your potential can never happen by chance.

And if you’re still a bit sceptical or not convinced, then do it simply because all the other options can only lead to failure.

As always, I appreciate those who take the time to read my work.
