What Is The Brain And Mind Really Doing? - From The Hypnotherapist's Perspective.

We’re going to explore the question, What is the brain & mind?
This is an interesting question, because if we ask, what is the function of any other organ or body part? We find it a much simpler question to answer.
So, today we’re going to look at a specific function of the brain/mind and the experience of consciousness.
So, what is the brain, mind, and consciousness really doing?
Well, I’d like to suggest that the brain is a reality simulator.
Why does it simulate reality? Simply put, the brain simulates reality to help you navigate reality.
We exist within reality and are part of it. However, the brain does not have access to this reality. Well, not direct access anyway.
The brain is so important that it lives inside an armoured vessel (the skull), and for additional protection, the brain also floats in cerebral fluid. This protection is great for the safety of the brain, but being this well-protected comes with some problems. One problem is that the brain lives in darkness, with no sound or feeling of its own. This is a big problem for a reality simulator, because how can it simulate reality if it doesn’t have access to reality and the external world?
So, in a nutshell:
- The brain grew some organic cameras (eyes), and now it can see.- It grew some organic microphones (cochlea/ears), so it can hear.- It grew nerve receptors throughout the body, so it can feel.- It did this with all five senses.
But the five senses are not reality itself. They take in information (e.g. light through the eyes and sounds through the ears). That input becomes an electronic signal and is sent to the corresponding sections of the brain. Then, the brain and its neurons, chemicals, and electrical impulses (action potentials) reconstruct this external reality into an image, sound, or other sensory perception. However, this isn’t reality. It is chemicals and electric signals reconstructing reality. Hence, why I say it is simulating reality to help you navigate reality.
It does this very quickly, almost in real time, and it does a good job. You generally navigate reality quite well, simply because you’re still alive. Which is the brain’s primary function, to keep you alive.
However, it is even more complicated than this. Your brain/mind then layers this simulated reality with many more things... it layers it with your thoughts, emotions, instincts, intuition, memories, etc. And yes, you might have guessed it; none of these things are part of external reality. Again, your brain does this to help you successfully navigate reality. So, be careful not to confuse the two.
Your thoughts, beliefs, values, emotions, instincts, and intuition can all be wrong. So, don’t take them too seriously. These things exist to help you navigate your life. Many people act with total certainty that these things are aligned with reality and the external world, and that just isn’t the case in many circumstances.
Wait, so, what does it all mean?
This concept is an important reminder not to take your thoughts and feelings too seriously. Enjoy the experience they give you. But ultimately, see them as resources that are there to help you navigate. These resources are information, and yes, sometimes these resources conflict with one another. But they are always there for you to interpret and use to navigate the reality of your life. Our true strength comes from how we consciously and strategically use these inner resources, which always were and always will be far more valuable than external resources.
As always, I appreciate you taking the time to read my work.
